as my first tattoo, i didn't really know what to expect. i thought it would feel a lot different than it did, and i think i thought it'd hurt more. i remember bracing myself when he was about to draw the first lines; i tensed up, then once he got going i was just like "wtf, i was nervous over hardly anything". but i will say that it hurt more when he was going over my spine area because of the bones. but yeah, the shoulder blade area is not bad. it is a walk in the park compared to a foot tattoo, oh my fucking god. don't even think about trying to get anything on the top of your foot. now, my feet are extremely bony and small/thin/narrow, but the skin on everyone's feet is thin and the nerves and veins are close to the surface. when they're working on your instep, it hurts, but the closer they get to your toes, FUCK. the guy had to give me some fruit punch for the sugar because i was feeling faint. and i have a high pain tolerance. and though i do love the tat on my foot, i'd never consider getting another anywhere near that area.

oh wtf, i'm sorry i totally started ranting about shit you didn't even ask about, and i'm going on and on like you care. haha sry dude<3

now, to get back to the subject. since pain and pain tolerance are very subjective and different for everyone, it's hard to say whether or not it'll be a big deal for you. it can depend, at least slightly, on your own body structure. just don't sweat it too much, and try not to think about how bad it might hurt because if you end up mentally psyching yourself out to expecting extreme pain, just by repeating that thought over in your mind, the extreme pain you imagined/expected could become reality, and even worse than you thought because you self-actualized yourself into thinking it would be, so it was. (oh, don't get high or drunk before to 'dull the pain' because i was a junkie when i got my second tattoo, and even on one of the strongest painkillers in existence, heroin didn't help at all. none of that stuff works for the acute pain of a tattoo). if you've got a bf/gf, have them come and hold your hand and talk to you, distracting you from the pain. i don't know how big the tattoo you want is, but if you're going it alone, just make the artist keep talking to you.

p.s. also, more than you can imagine, it really depends as well on who is tattooing you. make sure you know that the person does good work. you could get the same tattoo in the same spot from two different artists, and the one that is less professional or less experienced, their tattooing process could hurt a lot more than the other, and a lot more than it should. if it feels like they're drilling into you, they're not doing it right. i made this mistake on my second tat, not researching the artist or even just going by good things you've heard from other people. i didn't know shit about the guy that did my foot, and he started tattooing me before i even said to; i wasn't even expecting to get it that day; i just wanted a price quote, but before i knew it, he had the stencil on and before i knew it he was fucking tattooing me already. not cool. (not to mention he vastly overcharged me). i remember looking at his art hung on the wall, and it was lower than mediocre, and i was just thinking, "shit, what have i gotten myself into...." hah.

good luck.

p.p.s. what will your tattoo be of?

p.p.p.s. sorry for writing so much.

Thanks for all the info on it! I didn't mind the rant at all because it kinda gave me more perspective for my future tattoos and it was interesting. I promise. :) I got my tattoo on Tuesday, and it is a hummingbird and hibiscus flower. It's about seven inches by six inches, so kinda big haha.
It really wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be, but it was still pretty bad. I have a good pain tolerance so I was able to sit through the four hours it took but it still hurt like Hell.

I think lyrics/lines from poems, movies, books, etc. make some of the best tattoos. Words are beautiful and can mean so much to a person, to many people - why would it be stupid?! And words can grow with a person; they may mean one thing at one time and something different later in life. I think your tattoo is lovely :) I'm covered in words myself and plan on many more - I'll be a human book!

you're very right. the lyrics that i picked for this tattoo have a timeless beauty about them. it's just a really beautiful simile, even if someone doesn't know the exact song it came from--the words are beautiful regardless. i've gotten so many compliments on this tattoo from people i know for a fact have no idea what song it came from.

i too, eventually, would love to be a human book. i'm contemplating my next text tattoo right now. not quite sure what it'll be yet though.

p.s. thank you for the compliments :) means a lot.

I adore text tattoos. I think text tattoos are rather beautiful, maybe more than images.

what font is that?

i wish i could tell you what font it was, but it was so long ago (got the tattoo at 18 and i'm now 23) and it was on my last computer (not my current one) so since i don't have it anymore, i have no way of knowing the name of it, i'm really sorry. but i do know that it was some sort of calligraphy font, if that even helps at all.

did you send them a picture or something like that?
(just curious :3) i think artists are flattered when they know someone likes their lyrics so much^^

wow, ridiculously amazing! i've been looking for someone with a son, ambulance tattoo for the longest time. that's great. i've been wanting to get a son ambulance tattoo, currently i'm thinking of "there is a hidden beauty finding it's way out of everything"

that would be an amazing lyric to get a tattoo of. before i got this tattoo, i heavily debated whether i wanted "our lives twist like woven threads on an endless loom of time" or the lyric you just mentioned. in the end, i chose the former, but both of them would make amazing lyric tattoos. especially these two lyrics we're talking about, because even if no one knows where they're from, they still have tremendous beauty in them.

yep, in fact, i've been trying to make up my mind about which bright eyes lyric i want tattooed, but it's proven harder than i thought because there are so many amazing bright eyes lyrics that it's near impossible to choose just one!

I really like this. Really good lyrics. I don't think band lyric tattoos are dumb at all. Lyrics can hold a lot of meaning to people. I actually have a band logo tattoo and obviously lots of people think that's dumb but what they don't understand is I didn't get it to represent the band, i got it to represent the period of time and how their music helped me at that time. Most people will never understand that but each to their own I say.

Anyway I also like your idea for your next tattoo, they're also really nice lyrics.

haha, yeah i hit like the bottom half of the ribs, and honestly it only hurt very slightly more than the rest of the tat. but my artist did say that the ribs get more painful the closer they are to the armpit, and for his tattoo the pain was only extreme really high up..so i guess it depends? lol..i hope that answered your question :D if your planning on the rib tattoo, i would highly recommend it, i think they look beautiful there.

I really like this, i love text tattoos as well..

music can be so inspirational in life, dont let anyone tell you this is cliche or stupid, its awesome, and meaningful to you; the only thing that matters!
